The suspended mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, who is the first deputy chairman of the Liberal Party, appeared before the press after the voting was over. He said that the residents of Chisinau transmitted a message by boycotting the referendum initiated by the Socialists against him and called on the citizens to keep the pro-European and pro-Romanian course in the next year’s parliamentary elections as well, IPN reports.

Dorin Chirtoaca said the people made a distinction between the lies of those who do not want to do anything and showed support for the work done by him and his team at the City Hall during ten years. “By boycotting the referendum, the inhabitants of Chisinau lectured the political class and the adventurers who wasted 10 million lei and brought an artificial subject onto the public agenda and turned our life upside down during over half a year without any use,” stated Dorin Chirtoaca.

Asked what he will do next, the suspended mayor said he will struggle for justice and for the municipality of Chisinau and thanked everyone for support and for waking up society. Dorin Chirtoaca called on the Socialists to assume responsibility and to resign because they abused the citizens’ attention.

The Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu, who today celebrates his birthday, said the goal of the referendum was to spoil the political future of Dorin Chirtoaca, but the Socialists failed in their attempts. Also, the citizens of Chisinau who boycotted the referendum showed that they do not support the Socialists’ manipulation and lies as to the fact that Dorin Chirtoaca didn’t fulfill his duties.

Deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Valeriu Munteanu said the Socialists failed to attract to the voting at least those who signed for holding the referendum on the dismissal of the mayor of Chisinau and this should be taken by the Socialists as a signal. The Chisinau residents’ response to the Socialists’ call to take part in the plebiscite was an appropriate one. If the voters had considered Dorin Chirtoaca a corrupt mayor, they would have taken part in the referendum.
