Citizens need credible and strong media institutions to inform correctly and objectively, and honest and upright journalists to bring the truth to the people, Prime Minister Dorin Recean said at the Media Policy Forum. He noted that it is essential to combat Russian disinformation and propaganda, which undermine peace and stability in the country.

:A free, independent and responsible press is crucial for our country project – Building European Moldova at home,” said Prime Minister Dorin Recean, being quoted by IPN.

According to him, the Government’s goal is to develop media pluralism, support cultural, educational and media literacy projects, strengthen the editorial and economic independence of the media. The Ministry of Culture has been designated as the authority responsible for media policies. At the same time, in April, the Law on the Media Subsidization Fund was given a final reading and the first call within the contest for financing media projects will be announced in autumn this year.

Earlier this month, the Cabinet approved a mechanism to fully cover the adjusted newspaper distribution charge for 2024, based on ethics and deontology criteria, developed together with civil society.

The Media Policy Forum is an annual event that gathers together all the stakeholders, as well as national and international experts who discuss and identify solutions to media problems experienced in the Republic of Moldova. It is organized by Freedom House in partnership with Internews, with the financial support of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the British Embassy in Chisinau, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, and the Soros Foundation Moldova.
