The traffic police will stop drivers for routine checks even if they do not break the regulations. It is a special operation of the Traffic Police Division that starts on December 24 and will continue until the end of January. The Division’s press officer Aurelia Mija has told Info-Prim Neo that the operation is aimed at identifying and preventing cases of driving under the influence. During the winter holidays, many persons drink alcoholic beverages and then drive a car, endangering thus the lives of those around, said Aurelia Mija. The persons who will be caught driving under the influence will be banned from driving a vehicle for three to five years and may be fined 8 000 to 10 000 lei. As many as 149 persons had been killed in road accidents caused by inebriated drivers in the first ten months of this year.
