Dumitru Matkovski turns 70

Nice words and congratulations were offered to poet Dumitru Matkovski during a scientific conference held at the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) on Tuesday, October 20, to mark the jubilee of the academician. Dumitru Matcovschi turned 70. People of culture, officials, young people and friends of the master spoke about his contribution towards enriching the national culture, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Books written by Matkovski were exhibited in the Academy's hall. There were also presented tow books about the poet - “Poet and Fortress Man” and “Academician Dumitru Matkovski”.
Dumitru Matcovski is a prominent figure in our literature and culture, who fought to promote the national values, for freedom and the country, said Gheorghe Duca, the president of the ASM. “Dumitru Matcovski imposed himself in the Romanian literature and culture by his nonconformism and his popularity among readers is the most precious prize for this.”
Attending the event, Dumitru Matkovski said that he has always struggled for the language and motherland as these are the greatest treasures of a nation.”I work, fight, write and will continue doing so. I had enemies and friends. Even if they disappointed me, I continued to follow the road to freedom and truth,” the poet confessed. In his speech, he spoke about the Communist regime, saying the Communist rule as well as corruption and nepotism “confused the people”.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat congratulated the writer and praised him for his strong character and courage. He underlined that Moldova needs such personalities as Dumitru Matkovski.
On the poet's birthday, the Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca conferred the title of Citizen of Honor of Chisinau on Dumitru Matkovski. The mayor said that he has loved Dumitru Matkovski since he was a child and that he found out about Bessarabia from him. It was Dumitru Matkovski who could tell the truth about the values inherited from the ancestors in only several words, Dorin Chirtoaca said.
Dumitru Matkovski had been the head of the Writers Union of Moldova. Poet Ion Hadarca said that during that period the Writers Union changed radically. Owing to the poet's courage, the poems of Mihai Eminescu, the writings of Constantin Stere and other authors banned in that period started to be published.
Dumitru Matkovski is recognized internationally as one of the great Bessarabian poets. More than 200 of his poems became songs. He has printed over 50 volumes of poetry, prose and drama, including in Russian and Lithuanian. The books “Tata”, “Pomul vietii”, “Destinul”, “Neamul Cain” and others made a positive contribution to the National Revival Movement.
Dumitru Matkovski is a titular member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, a knight of the Order of the Republic, a knight of the Romanian Star Order – Commander Degree, holder of the medals “Mihai Eminescu” and “For Distinction in Labor”, and a laureate of the International Poetry Festival “Nichita Stanescu”.
