The national library system of the Republic of Moldova consists of 2,600 libraries that host over 58 million copies of books and documents. The data were presented by the National Bureau of Statistics on the occasion of the National Reading Day, which is marked on February 14, IPN reports.
According to the NBS, the national libraries in 2022 had over 1.1 million active users (e.n. against the country’s population of 2.5 million in 2022, according to the NBS). Library users paid more than 10.2 million visits to libraries. They also borrowed 16.9 million books.
The libraries registered 726,700 followers on their social media accounts.
The National Reading Day was introduced in the Republic of Moldova in 2022, in connection with World Read Aloud Day that is celebrated globally at the beginning of February and with the anniversary of poet Grigore Vieru, who was born on February 14.
