Each third Moldovan received compensated medicines and medical devices in 2023

Every third person in Moldova last year benefited from compensated medicines and medical devices. So, the figure stands at almost 758,000 people, of whom over 756,000 received compensated medicines, while 77,000 benefited also from compensated medical devices, such as lancing devices for diabetes  and urostomy and colostomy bags,  IPN reports.

The National Health Insurance Company (CNAM) said that most of them, almost 48,000 persons, benefited from compensated preparations for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, while over 125,000 – from diabetes medicines and medical devices.

In 2023, eight new international nonproprietary names were included in the list of compensated medicines for the treatment of several diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and glaucoma, and for the new diseases put on the list – psoriasis and breast cancer.

Currently, the list of compensated pharmaceutical preparations includes 167 international nonproprietary names.

The most expensive medicine compensated with money from the mandatory health insurance funds last year was used by patients with multiple sclerosis and the annual amount paid by CNAM per beneficiary was over 119,000 lei.

In 2023, the total costs associated with compensated medicines and medical devices exceeded 930 million lei.

The compensated medicines are prescribed by the family doctor or, as the case may be, by the pediatrician, endocrinologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, oncologist, while the prescription for compensated medical devices is issued by the family doctor on the recommendation of the medical specialist.

Compensated medicines and medical devices can be picked up on the presentation of the prescription in any pharmacy contracted by CNAM throughout the Republic of Moldova.

This year, CNAM planned over one billion lei in the mandatory health insurance funds for compensated medicines and medical devices. For the release of these products, the company contracted over 200 pharmaceutical service providers with 1,329 branches.
