Moldova could generate electricity for Ukraine based on Ukrainian natural gas


The media in the region, but also in Russia, reported that Moldova will supply electricity to Ukraine. Following the meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of the Chisinau-Bucharest-Kiev trilateral last week, the plan for the construction of electricity generators on the territory of the Republic of Moldova that will work based on Ukrainian gas was outlined, IPN reports, referring to informator.ua.

Cabinet approves budgetary-fiscal and customs policy for 2025

The Cabinet on Monday approved the draft budgetary-fiscal and customs policy for 2025. The draft law mainly adjusts the Fiscal Code and the Customs Code, but also comes with amendments to the normative acts related to them.

Chisinau turns into international financial center

This week Chisinau will be an international financial center. Around 100 representatives of central banks and ministries of finance from the member countries of the Constituency of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank will meet in Chisinau on July 10-12.

National Bee Day to be marked May 20

The National Bee Day was instituted in the Republic of Moldova. According to a draft law that was approved by the Cabinet, it will be marked on May 20.

Transnistrian region can remain without methane after Ukraine stops transit of Russian gas in 2025

Starting with 2025, Ukraine will stop the transit of Russian gas through its territory and the Transnistrian region can remain without methane as a result. The authorities in Chisinau are preparing to manage possible disruptions in gas supplies following Ukraine’s decision to stop the transit of Russian gas, ensuring that the impact on the consumers on both banks of the Nistru River is minimized, Minister of Energy Victor Parlicov stated in the program “Political Studio” on Vocea Basarabiei station.

State will borrow€ 98m to rehabilitate regional roads

The state will borrow €98 million euros from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association for the rehabilitation of regional roads. It will also invest in road safety, modernization and construction of frontier posts (Giurgiulesti, Leuseni, Ungheni), and access roads to border crossing points.

Farmers can apply for direct payments in the livestock sector. This year, for the first time, the direct payment for a kilogram of sheep’s and goat’s milk is launched.

Anca Dragu at meeting with World Bank delegation: Moldova needs to develop its financial market


The Republic of Moldova needs to develop its financial market. There is currently a low level of financial intermediation, which requires solutions and actions from both the banking and entrepreneurial sectors. The National Bank of Moldova is at the center of these discussions to identify solutions to develop Moldova’s financial market, NBM governor Anca Dragu stated in a meeting with a World Bank delegation led by Antonella Bassani, Vice-President for Europe and Central Asia, who is in Chisinau.

Switzerland assisted Moldova through projects to the value of 6bn lei

Switzerland during more than 20 years has contributed to the development of the Republic of Moldova with almost 300 million Swiss Francs, or 6 billion Moldovan Lei, over the entire period, Guido Beltrani, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Moldova, stated in a Swiss Summer Day event that was held in Chisinau to also celebrate beforehand the Swiss National Day set on August 1.
Attempts are made to impose tax monopoly on metals market, Valentin Eșanu

The president of the Metals Employers’ Association Valentin Eșanu said that lately his company has been subjected to a significant number of inspections by the Environmental Inspectorate, the State Labor Protection Inspectorate and the State Tax Service. According to him, the pressure in the form of inspections from public authorities and court decisions unfavorable to the company is caused by an attempt to impose a tax monopoly in the field of collection, processing, marketing and export of ferrous and non-ferrous metal waste.

EU contributes to supporting energy efficiency projects in Moldova’s residential sector


The European Union will contribute €9,5 million in grants in support of credit lines provided under the EBRD Green Economy Financing Facility in residential sector (Residential GEFF). This joint initiative aims to incentivize Moldovan apartment and home-owners in undertaking energy efficiency renovations to reduce their energy bills and strengthen Moldova’s long-term energy security. The European Commission and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development signed a statement of intention for establishing a program to reduce the cost of energy efficiency renovations for residential buildings in the Republic of Moldova.

Romanian Commodities Exchange expands to Moldova

The Romanian Commodities Exchange extends its operations into the Republic of Moldova and will serve the needs of entrepreneurs and public institutions. This was announced by Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Dumitru Alaiba at a joint press briefing with the president of the Romanian Commodities Exchange Gabriel Purice. The minister noted that it is a crucial step to strengthen transparency and efficiency in commercial transactions.

NBM employees will not own holdings in share capital of supervised entities


The members of the management bodies of the National Bank of Moldova and NBM staff will not be able to possess holdings in the share capital of supervised entities. This is provided in a draft law that was given a final reading by Parliament. According to the authors, this provision was included in order to prevent potential conflicts of interest in the process of fulfilling the regulatory, supervisory and control duties with regard to these entities.

Chisinau hosts summit of representatives of finance ministries and central banks from 16 countries

Chisinau brought together over 100 representatives of finance ministries and central banks from 16 countries that are part of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank constituencies for a summit on July 10-12. The central theme of the meeting is “Ensuring vigorous growth in a volatile and uncertain environment”, with topics related to mobilizing private capital and opportunities for innovation and growth driven by artificial intelligence.

Grants to promote wine companies

At least 15 wine companies from all the regions of the Republic of Moldova will benefit from the WESA program that offers grants of up to 800,000 lei to support wineries in their efforts to become visible internationally. The WESA Grants Program, which was launched today, aims at increasing exports by 15-20 percent and marketing budgets by 60 percent annually.

Ministry of Energy launches first tender contests for large renewable energy capacities

The Ministry of Energy has launched the first tenders for large renewable energy capacities in the Republic of Moldova. Investors are invited to implement wind and solar renewable energy projects. The announcement and the tender documents will most probably be published next week, IPN reports, with reference to Minister of Energy Victor Parlicov.

War cuts power between Moldova and Ukraine

The high-voltage overhead power line that connects the energy systems of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova was disconnected yesterday due to technical failures, said the Ukrainian National News agency, with reference to the Ministry of Energy of the neighboring country.

Dumitru Alaiba: Apricot exports rose 4.5 times during a year

The exports of apricots from the Republic of Moldova increased 4.5 times during one year, said Deputy Prime Minister Dumitru Alaiba, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization. A number of 821 tonnes of apricots were exported in January-June 2023, while in the same period of this year the figure grew to 3,689 tonnes.

Moldova’s trade has been stagnating for the second year already. Exports of goods have fallen sharply, and in the last half year exports of services have also stagnated, finds economist Veaceslav Ioniță of the IDIS Viitorul think-tank.
