The prices of eggs at the market fell almost twice. Producers say they reduced prices because of the lower demand as many people bought eggs for the Easter holidays beforehand. Meanwhile, the authorities stepped up the examinations of the quality of eggs given that they are among the most popular products on Easter. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Veaceslav Ciuhri, deputy head of the Agency for Consumer Protection’s Food Products and Services Division, said that the inspections are intensified before holidays, especially of the products that are in greater demand, including the eggs. “During the last three-four years, based on an order made by the authorities, unplanned inspections are carried out during the holidays to check the quality of products, including food products. The eggs are socially important products and they are examined practically throughout the year,” stated Veaceslav Ciuhri. As to the sudden decrease in egg prices, he said that the producers increased the stores and now reduce the prices so as to sell all the reserves. The eggs cannot be of a poor quality as they are daily subjected to examination. Ion Bazgu, director of the poultry breeder “Avicola Moldova”, has told Info-Prim Neo that the prices of eggs go up or fall depending on the supply and demand. “The consumers hurried to purchase eggs for Easter in advance and we now have an excess of products,” he stated. The eggs are an alterable product and thus the producers prefer to sell them cheaper than to throw them when the use-by date expires. Therefore, the producers diminished their prices from 13-12 lei to 8-10 lei ten pieces. “We do not sustain losses yet, but are at a limit,” stated Ion Bazgu. The previous days, the hen eggs at the market cost up to 19 lei ten pieces. Now they cost 9-9.50 lei ten pieces.
