EIB to contribute to promotion of reforms and modernization of Moldova’s Railways

The Government suggested for ratification the financing contract between the Republic of Moldova and the European Investment Bank (EIB) within the project to build and rehabilitate the railway infrastructure and to purchase rolling stock to the value of €50 million, IPN reports.

The contract with the EIB was signed in Chisinau on September 26, 2016 as a follow-up to the lending agreement between Moldova and the EBRD to the value of €52.5m of November 14, 2014.

The contract has two major components. The first envisions the purchase of 11 main-line Diesel locomotives for transporting passengers and freight and equipment for maintaining the locomotives.

Within the second component, there will be rehabilitated the railway infrastructure on the main corridors Bender – Chisinau – Ungheni – Balti – Ocnita - Bender – Basarabeasca – Etulia – Giurgiulesti, which are the gates included in the extended network to the neighboring states.

The contract with the EIB envisions a grace period of five years.

Since 2007, the EIB has provided financing of €656m to Moldova for 15 projects.
