Eight servicemen of Moldova were detached to work within operations held under the aegis of the United Nations. Seventy Moldovan servicemen have taken part in the international missions of the UN since cooperation relations were established in 2003. The data were presented in a ceremony staged at the Ministry of Defense on May 29, on the occasion of the International Day of the United Nations Peacekeepers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Currently, four Moldovan military men work in Ivory Coast, while by two in Liberia and Sudan. According to Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta, Moldova, as a member of the UN, contributes to maintaining peace at global level within possibilities, while the participation of the National Army servicemen in the UN missions in Sudan, Liberia and Ivory Coast is a proof of the country’s aspirations to promote peace, stability and security.
As many as 120,000 peacekeepers from 116 countries are now involved in the operations held under the aegis of the UN. They work in the most dangerous and unstable parts of the world. The number of servicemen who sacrificed their lives for peace exceeded 2,900. A number of 112 men and women serving with the UN died in 2011, while another 27 peacekeepers were killed in the first four months of this year.
