“If the reforms initiated in Moldova more than a year ago are halted, the European Union will lose nothing but the invested money. We cannot say the same about Moldova, which will lose a lot,” Acting President Mihai Ghimpu stated for Radio Moldova, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Moldova received US$2.6 billion in foreign assistance, including nonreimbursable grants of US$1.3 billion. Some of the politicians say Russia or China could compensate for the financial support provided to Moldova if the EU stopped releasing loans and other financial assistance. Mihai Ghimpu stated that a country cannot be independent if it serves the interests of another state. The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other European institutions support the countries that implement reforms and do not need to have their interests promoted. The Acting President said that these institutions offer financial assistance not in order to maintain a political force in power, but to foster the implementation of social and economic reforms that would lead to the creation of workplaces so that the Moldovans could return home and invest money in a free and sustainable economy. The leader of the Liberal Party also said the accusations that the Alliance for European Integration borrowed money from the foreign partners in order to keep power, made by the Communists Party, are lies and manipulations.
