The National Army will strengthen its air defense capabilities with a new package of non-reimbursable support from the European Union. It goes to €9 million that will be granted to the Republic of Moldova under the European Peace Facility. The money will go to buy air defense systems that will be delivered according to a schedule agreed with the EU, IPN reports.
The Ministry of Defense noted that this new package is part of a broader defense cooperation agreement with the EU and comes in the wake of requests made by the Republic of Moldova, based on the assessment of risks and threats amidst the war in Ukraine and their effects on national security.
The delivery of the equipment to the National Army will be preceded by an agreement between the European Union and the Government of the Republic of Moldova to ensure compliance with the requirements and conditions of the European Peace Facility.
“The defense institution will increase and modernize its capabilities to protect civilian critical infrastructure and also the population in crisis and emergency situations. It will also strengthen its capacities to participate in international missions, including the EU, thus contributing to global peace and security,” the Ministry of Defense said in a press release.
