Ex-Premier Ion Ciubuc buried

Ion Ciubuc, who held the post of Prime Minister in 1997-1999, was buried at the Central Cemetery on Armeneasca St in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu attended the funeral ceremony at the Palace of the Republic. “I regret the death of Ion Ciubuc. Even if he held office in a very difficult period of time, Ion Ciubuc managed to lay the basis of institutions that are important for the good functioning of our state,” he said.

Moldova’s first President Mircea Snegur stated for IPN that Ion Ciubuc will remain in memory as a great man and a real patriot. “I saw him fearless during the coup of 1991. He was the first to mount the barricades. He had to manage exceptionally important sectors for reanimating the economy and returning things to normality,” stated Mircea Snegur.

“When I met him in the yard, I could not ignore his way of behaving towards people. He spoke nicely and spoke to everyone. He was a helpful and reliable person,” said Tamara Luica, who was his block neighbor.

Ion Ciubuc died in the morning of January 29 at the age of 74. In 1990-1991, he was first deputy minister economy. Since March 1991 until September 1991, he served as first deputy prime minister and the Government’s standing representative to the Cabinet of Ministers of the USSR. Between September 1992 and April 1994, he held the post of first deputy minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Moldova. Later, in April – December 1994, he was first deputy minister of economy of the Republic of Moldova.

On December 27, 1994, Ion Ciubuc was named chairman of the Court of Auditors. Between January 24, 1997 and February 1, 1999, Ion Ciubuc served as Prime Minister of Moldova, in two successive governments.
