The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supports the development of the seed production sector of Moldova. A project to produce sorts of plants resistant to climate change that was financed by the FAO with US$475,000 will be completed this yearend.

In an international workshop, Mihai Suvac, department head at the Ministry of Agriculture, said that over the last ten years Moldova faced a number of pronounced disasters, such as droughts and floods. This was the reason why the country asked for financial support from the FAO. The project started in 2011, IPN reports.

The main beneficiaries of the project were the Center for Seeds Certification and the state commission on testing of sorts of plants. According to Mihail Suvac, the FAO supported financially about 200 Moldovan farmers affected by the 2012 drought. There were purchased 270 tonnes of seeds of a high quality that were used to sow about 700 hectares of farmland.

FAO Plant Production and Protection Officer Avetik Nersisyan said the organization expects ideas to be proposed at the end of the workshop for promoting a project to protect the plants in an integrated way.

The international workshop is held in Chisinau on November 27-28. It centers on pesticide management, utilization of useful insects and systems for combating the main vine diseases, conservative agriculture and the obstacles it encounters in Moldova, organic agriculture, etc.
