Vlad Filat has changed his mind about asking the Constitutional Court to interpret a constitutional provision that he believed would help him in his trial. The former prime minister told reporters he just “doesn’t trust the judges”.
Filat’s lawyer Victor Munteanu said “this is the civic position of my client in light of the recent political developments.” “Specifically, the rulings pronounced by the Constitutional Court pertaining to the recent political situation in Moldova and, more importantly, the Venice Commission opinion on those Constitutional Court rulings. Vlad Filat considered it wasn’t a good idea to trust these judges with deciding on the questions raised by the defense,” said the lawyer.
In the second criminal case against him, Vlad Filat is being accused of having laundered large amounts of money that he had gained by passive corruption and influence peddling during his tenure as prime minister. On the latter charges, Filat was sentenced in 2016 to nive years in prison.
