In the Republic of Moldova, the TV channels do not fulfill their duties. They are either politically affiliated and usually fulfill the employer’s instructions or pursue geopolitical interests, said Fiodor Ghelici, the official representative of the International/Intergovernmental Socioeconomic Development Organization (IOED), with a special consultative status under the UN Economic and Social Council.
“I didn’t see independent media outlets in the Republic of Moldova. That’s why the people are disappointed and do not trust anyone. The same faces can be seen on all the channels,” Fiodor Ghelici stated in a news conference at IPN.
He presented the resuts of the two-year monitoring of the media in Moldova from the angle of the coverage and protection of human rights. “During two years, we zealously conducted the monitoring, inching opinion polls, and familiarized ourselves with the media outlets working in Moldova, such as newspapers and magazines, radio and TV stations and Internet publications, and want to draw attention to an important situation we noticed. In the Republic of Moldova, the mass media that should present objective information to the people and should truthfully present the state of affairs and peoples’ viewpoints regrettably have someone behind them,” stated Fiodor Ghelici.
According to the monitoring results, the TV channels are watched by those who do not have access to the Internet. “The Moldovans no longer watch TV channels. They inform themselves from the Internet, from social networking sites,” stated Fiodor Ghelici.
He wondered why the media do not cover the problems of the ordinary people, the life of rural women with many children who remained without husbands and why all the media outlets have a particular category of people from a particular list who can come to a TV channel or another. “If they don’t tell the truth in the Republic of Moldova and don’t present objective information, no progress will be ever made here,” stated Feorod Ghelici, calling on the journalists to be objective and independent.
IOED provided an appreciation certificate to the Internet TV channel „FACES TV - PUBLIC CHANNEL”. The certificate was handed over to the channel’s main producer Olga Bejan-Leva.
