The first center in Găgăuzia for victims of violence, which will be open by the end of this year, will commence its activity in February-March 2020. Project coordinator, Vitalie Frecăuțanu, told IPN that construction works have not yet been completed. In the near future, the budget will be approved and the personnel will be recruited.

The center' status is that of a public institution. "In parallel with the construction works, the partners from Găgăuzia, the Department for Health and Social Assistance, are founding the public institution "Assistance Center for victims of domestic violence". The processes run in parallel", said Vitalie Frecăuțanu.

A funding campaign was launched at the beginning of the year in order to collect funds for the establishment of the center, however, the campaign did not meet the coordinators's expectations. The executive of UTA Găgăuzia contributed to the completion of the construction works, by allocating 85 thousand dollars, said Vitalie Frecăuțanu.

The center will be a shelter for victims of domestic violence and a community center, open to both men and women who need psychological, legal and social assistance. Up to 20 people can be hosted at the center.

Studies show that seven out of ten women in rural areas and six out of ten women between the ages of 25 and 44 have been subjected to at least some form of violence by their partner throughout life. More than half of all Moldovan women have been victims of psychological violence. One in five adult women was subjected to sexual harassment.
