Fluorescent angiographic tests were performed for the first time on two patients with eye diseases at the Ophthalmologic Section of the Municipal Clinical Hospital “Saint Trinity”, with modern equipment. The procedure was conducted by ophthalmologist-surgeon Sergiu Andronic, Doctor of Medical Sciences, under the guidance of professor Valeriu Cusnir, who heads the Section, and Doctor of Medical Sciences Valentina Lupan, IPN reports.

In a press release, the medical institution said fluorescent angiography is a technique for examining the circulation of the retina and choroid using a fluorescent dye and a specialized angiographic camera. It involves administration of sodium fluorescein into the systemic circulation, and then an angiogram is obtained by photographing the fluorescence emitted after illumination of the retina with blue light. The test uses the dye tracing method.

Fluorescein angiography is one of several health care applications of this dye. The procedure does not involve the use of ionizing radiation.
