For the first time in Moldova’s history, a judge was sentenced to jail for corruption. The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office has announced that a judge from Telenesti, who was arrested in his office in October 2013, immediately after receiving US$200 from the lawyer of a party involved in a civil lawsuit, got seven years, IPN reports.
The money was requested and received by the judge for rejecting the claim of the opponent party in a civil case. Besides imprisonment, the judge was also banned from holding public posts for a period of 10 years and obliged to pay a fine of 160,000 lei.
The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
