Five customs officers tried for corruption

The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office has formally accused of corruption five former officers at the Larga customs, Briceni, sending their cases to court. According to the prosecution, in July-August 2013, the accused repeatedly took bribes from truck drivers for letting them pass without paying import duties, IPN reports.

According to a press release from the General Prosecutor's Office, for a $1200 fee, the officers performed only formal checks, allowing any kind of cargo or items, even illegal or hazardous, to be brought into the country

The accused officers were arrested at the end of September 2013, after a search. At the request of the prosecutors, they were held in preventive arrest. Later, the court allowed them to be investigated at large. If found guilty, the accused can get up to 10 years in prison and fine of up to 60,000 lei, in addition to 2 to 5 years ban from occupying certain posts or engaging in certain activities.
