A flash-mob, accusing Law enforcement bodies and the judiciary of irresponsibility, gathered outside the Ministry of the Interior’s headquarters. The event was organized by public association Amnesty International Moldova on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, marked on June26, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The flash-mob was a volley game in which the members of teams represented various law enforcement and justice bodies, while the ball symbolized a criminal file passed from one judge to another.
Executive director of Amnesty International Moldova Cristina Pereatcu explained that the flash-mob illustrated the way in which the Ministry of the Interior, the Prosecutor General’s Office, first courts, the Court of Appeal and other bodies shirk from some commitments by claiming that these are beyond their competences. “The flash-mob perfectly highlights the Moldovan judiciary, where a file is passed from one court to another and finds justice only at European institutions”, said Cristina Pereatcu.
Vladislav Gribincea, executive director of the Legal Resources Center, says that nothing can justify torture, and those who use it must be punished severely. “Although in recent years authorities have claimed to have been fighting torture, society sees no changes. The lack of required punishments for the tortures of 2009, as a result of which no person was jailed for torture, only further erodes trust in the legal system”, said the jurist.
In April this year, Amnesty International Moldova presented the report “An unsolved problem: fighting torture and ill-treatment in Moldova”, describing the authorities’ failure in thoroughly investigating complaints about the abuses committed by police officers.
