He was a European poet, but in his heart he was the poet of the Romanian nation. The word was his power with which he managed to destroy the empire of evil. This is how those who went to render homage to Grigore Vieru at his bust on the Classical Writers Alley in Chisinau remembered the bard. On February 14, he would have turned 77, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Not accidentally, Grigore Vieru was born on Saint Valentine’s Day. He was and will remain the only one who described this feeling so deeply. It is our duty to follow what the great poet believed in – the love for the country, the woman, the language, the parent’s house,” said Prime Minister Vlad Filat.
Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca remembered that he studied poet Grigore Vieru since he was a child, starting with the book “Albinuta” and continuing with the patriotic songs later. “The poet managed to promote by words what we now have the chance to build,” he stated.
In memory of the late Grigore Vieru, the Writers Union together with the Ministry of Culture will organize different events the coming days. The poet’s bust will be set up at the High School “Grigore Vieru” in Bacioi village. Arcadie Suceveanu, the head of the Writers Union, said the Union intends to translate Vieru’s work into several languages.
The event was attended by the bard’s friends from Romania, who said that Grigore Vieru is the poet of the entire Romanian nation, not only of the people between the Prut and Nistru Rivers.
Grigore Vieru was born in Pererita, former county Hotin, on February 14, 1935. He died on January 18, 2009 as a result of a serious road accident not far from Chisinau.
