Senior state officials laid flowers at the monument to Ruler Stephan the Great in central Chisinau in the morning of August 31, on the Our Language Day. The event involved President Nicolae Timofti, Head of Parliament Igor Corman, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, members of the Government, MPs, representatives of the diplomatic corps, people of culture and ordinary people. Flowers were also laid at the busts of writers on the Classical Writers Alley in the central park of Chisinau, IPN reports.

Nicolae Timofti underlined that more investments must be made in education so that the Romanian language is spoken correctly.

Valeriu Strelet, who heads the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group, said the usage of a correct Romanian language must be promoted by the own example. “In the education institutions, the number of Romanian language lessons should be increased, while the students and teachers should more seriously address the issue of Romanian language studying. Also, the public announcements must be written in the Romanian language first and then in other languages. We should respect ourselves and others will then respect us,” he stated.

In the same connection, the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Gheorghe Duca noted that greater respect for the Romanian language must be cultivated. “More than 28 million people speak Romanian. The more Romanian is spoken, the more it develops. We should not forget that Romanian is one of the 23 official European languages,” he said.

On August 31, Moldova celebrates the Our Language Day. The Constitution provides that ‘Moldovan’ is the official language of Moldova, while the Declaration of Independence, which is the primary constitutional norm that prevails over the text of the supreme law, stipulates that Romanian is the official language. The language of the majority population of Moldova obtained the status of official language on August 31, 1989, replacing thus Russian in this role. Moldova’s anthem is called “Our Language” and was written by poet Alexei Mateevici at the beginning of the previous century.
