A foreign citizen aged 37 was arrested when he attempted to live Moldova through the Chisinau International Airport. He is suspected of being the head of an international group that organized the illegal migration of people from Arab countries and of trafficking in persons for labor exploitation. He was placed under arrest for 30 days, IPN reports.
According to the General Police Inspectorate, it was established that starting with 2012 until now, the group’s leader, staying legally in Moldova, recruited four persons to work in Syria and in Moldova, engaging also a foreign capital company registered in Moldova. In the period, the members of the group facilitated the transportation and stay in Moldova of nine persons of Syrian origin.
When he arrived in Moldova, a citizen of Syria aged 40 was lodged in Chisinau and, on the pretext of having to repay a debt of US$1,000 for being helped to immigrate, was forced to work for a month as cook at fast food kiosks in Chisinau. Afterward, the leader of the group offered him to bring his wife and three minor children to Moldova for €7,500. After the family reunited, the man had to work as a cook for one year and eight months for repaying the claimed debt.
The arrested man will serve up to 20 years in jail if he is found guilty.
