Foreign citizens in trouble with the law will no longer be able to use legal loopholes to avoid extradition from Moldova and dodge criminal consequences. A bill aiming to fix issues in extradition procedures for asylum seekers was adopted today by Parliament in its final reading.
The note accompanying the bill says that criminals seeking asylum in Moldova often take advantage of the fact that the times for legally holding someone in custody with a view to extradition are usually shorter than what it takes the authorities to decide on their asylum applications.
Therefore, the bill increases the maximum term of pre-extradition detention from 180 days to 12 months. Also, the legislation is changed so as to fast-track the examination of asylum applications submitted by people sought for extradition, as well as appeals in court.
The amendments will take effect with publishing in the Official Gazette.
