Two former mayors of Corlateni village of Rascani district will stand trial for negligence and abuse of power. The Nord Service of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office completed the investigation and sent the case to the Rascani District Court, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, in 1999 – 2007 the two sold 0.97 hectares of publicly-owned farmland to particular companies and changed the purpose of the land at a time when such decisions can be taken only by the Government. Thus, without compensating the losses sustained when excluding the land from farming activity, the former mayors caused damage of half a million lei to the state budget.
The former mayors are also accused of signing and issuing land ownership certificates to 119 persons, allowing them to freely use plots of 6.4 hectares from the reserve fund of the mayor’s office. The given persons didn’t form part of the categories of people who are entitled to free land on which to build homes.
According to the prosecutors, one of the former mayors, who managed the village in 1999 – 2003, illegally issued a land ownership certificate to his daughter. The plot was assessed at over 30,000 lei.
Both of the culprits, aged 66, were banned form leaving the country. They face two to six years in jail and will also be disqualified from performing particular activities for a period of five to ten years.
