The Supreme Council of Magistrates still does not have three permanent members. In the November 22 extraordinary General Assembly of Judges, no candidate polled the necessary number of votes, IPN reports.
Only 14 of the 16 candidates who filed applications remained. Nina Cernat and Gheorghe Balan withdrew from the race, urging their colleagues to vote for Ion Muruianu.
The CSM has 12 members – 6 are elected by the General Assembly of Judges, three are ex officio members (the minister of justice, the prosecutor general and the president of the Supreme Court of Justice) and three are named by Parliament. The composition of the CSM is renewed as the terms of the members elected in 2009 expired.
Judges Dumitru Visternicean, Tatiana Raducanu and Anatolie Turcan were elected as members of the Supreme Council of Magistrates on October 18. The terms of another three CSM members expire at the end of November and are to be replaced by candidates selected by Parliament from among professors.
