“The Flag of Holy Freedom” is a collection of articles signed by the late Gheorghe Ghimpu and was published on Friday. “Gheorghe Ghimpu was a sad optimist, he always fought for the revival of Romanians from Basarabia and this is felt in the collection published 11 years after his death”, said writer Nicolae Dabija at the volume's launch, Info-Prim Neo reports. He argues that a book about all those who fought for the nation's dignity should be written. “I've been saying for a long time that there should be a subject in schools that would teach our children what is dignity, for that's what our nation is lacking. Gheorghe Ghimpu wrote some highly necessary articles. He reached true literature later than us, but always supported the idea of Romanianism and this can be felt in his writings”, added Nicolae Dabija. The writer claims that Gheorghe Ghimpu (Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu's brother) had confessed to him before death that freedom was harsher than the gulag. “It was during a period when he was attacked by a publication, which I think neared his end. The accident that took his life doesn't seem a coincidence either. It happened only two weeks after Gheorghe Ghimpu had declared that Russian should pay damages to Moldova for the occupation period”, said Nicolae Dabija. Deputy leader of the Liberal Party and historian Anatol Petrencu explained that the idea of Romanianism was like a red line through Gheorghe Ghimpu's collection. “He condemned denationalization, treason and traitors. He insisted that we should not kneel before the Russians, but tell them straight that we are Romanians. The book published today is more topical than in 2001”, he stressed. The First Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party Ion Hadarca noted that the day that reunited politicians, writers and public figures was a tragic one. “In a few days we'll mark 11 years since we lost uncle Gicu. He never insisted on his role as a publicist. He had other values. He thought about the nation's perpetuation. Gheorghe Ghimpu stated some truths, brought arguments and nobody doubts his uprightness. His cause was that of Romanianism. Some truths can be discovered only by reading this volume. It's an exceptional book”, said Ion Hadarca. Gheorghe Ghimpu was a politician and a political detainee during the Soviet regime for his ideas and role in creating the National-Patriotic Front of Basserabia and Northern Bucovina in 1972. He was one of the founders of the National Liberation Movement, member of the Executive Committee of the People's Front of Moldova and member of the first democratically elected Parliament in 1990. He was the first to take off the Soviet flag and to hoist the Tricolor on Parliament's building on April 27, 1990. He died on November 13, 2000, from injuries suffered in a car crash on October 27. The circumstances of the accident remain unclear until today.
