Dumitru Matcovschi was the poet of pain and suffering. His death means nothing else but going to another world where his soul will be at peace. The poet was and will remain a symbol of dignity and national honor. Such opinions were stated by people of art who came to bid farewell to Dumitru Matcovschi, IPN reports.

Teo Chiriac, deputy chairman of the Writers Union of Moldova, said that after the tragic accident of 1989, Dumitru Matcovschi became a real martyr. By the general simplicity of his verses, the artist and poet Dumitru Matcovschi reached perfection. “It is a nice weather, but also a period of confusion and transition. Now that everything becomes a huge market, we all have the chance of becoming a mafia. We now need powerful and honest people like Grigore Vieru and strong characters like Dumitru Matcovschi who would say that our ideals are not for sale,” stated Teo Chiriac.

Writer Ion Hadarca said that God took from among us one of the bravest men of this nation. Dumitru Matcovschi didn’t have a bright destiny as they wanted to shut him down, but he never accepted to keep silent.

“Dumitru Matcovschi is an example of dignity in the Romanian literature. He never gave up. Only God and his relatives know what he went through. There were happy moments too. At the Poetry Spring Festival in Vilnius in 1981, poet Dumitru Matcovschi spoke in the native language about the native language. Everyone applauded him standing. It was a magic moment,” said Ion Hadarca.

He added that 1987-1990 are the years of Dumitru Matcovschi during which he told the greatest truths at a time when the writers and promoters of the national ideals were called to the Central Communist Committee to be reprimanded.

Ninela Caranfil, actress of the National Theater “Mihai Eminescu”, said that not long ago the theater’s troupe went on a tour of Romania where they presented the play “Tree of Life” written by Dumitru Matcovschi. Every time the spectators stood up and applauded long. “When we returned home, I phoned the poet and told him that the play conquered Romania’s heart. He was very glad. Dumitru Matcovschi is and will remain the poet who beat death. He wasn’t afraid of death and now he is not dead. Now God took him into heaven were there are his friends and where his soul will feel much better than in this world,” she stated.

Dumitru Matcovschi passed away in the hospital on June 26. He will be buried today, June 29, in his native village Vadul-Rascov of Soldanesti district.
