Food producers and traders will be required to ensure that trans fatty acids (TFAs) do not exceed 2/100 grams of fat in the total food content, under the latest update of the food safety regulations.

The decision to limit the amount of trans fats in foods was taken by the Government to guarantee a high level of consumer health protection. This is one of the measures by which the authorities aim to prevent heart disease and stroke considering that trans fatty acids are known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and other chronic illnesses.

The Government decision covers other hazardous substances as well, in accordance with European legislation.
