Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev instructed relevant government officials to draw up a complex plan of measures to modernise, endow and develop the institution of district police inspectors, Info-Prim Neo learned from the Government press service. At a meeting on Thursday, January 10, the Premier noted that the plan should ensure proper working conditions for district inspectors and include a mechanism to provide them with housing. Vasile Tarlev emphasised the role of district police inspectors in ensuring public order and the security of the citizens, adding that it is impermissible when a police officer has no desk to work at, no place to live, and no outfit. The Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Local Public Administration and other government offices were tasked to make sure that all the police stations are provided with telephone connections, are properly equipped, and enjoy the benefits of information technology. Interior Minister Gheorghe Papuc mentioned the inappropriate working conditions for some district police inspectors, especially the ones working in rural areas – many police stations are limited in workspace, lack a sound technical backing, and only 50 stations have squad cars. The Minister went on to complain that the local authorities shy away from contributing to the endowment of police stations and to the development of voluntary people’s guards. According to Papuc, some 115 posts of district inspectors are vacant at present.
