The police arrested three persons of the five suspected of torturing an elderly couple with fire in Cerlina village of Soroca district on December 6. In a news conference on December 15, Deputy Minister of the Interior Iurie Cheptanaru said the two old persons were tied, beaten and burnt by their own grandchildren because they did not want to give the money they had in the house, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Cheptanaru, the couple sold their son's apartment for US$40,000. They gave US$20,000 of this sum to their grandchildren and stored the rest. In order to make them give the money, two of the grandsons accompanied by several persons with a criminal record went to the old persons' home equipped with tear gas and sticking plaster. They maltreated the elderly man and woman and tortured them with fire. The man died in hospital on December 10. The woman is still in hospital. The other two persons left for Russia on December 7, but will be found. The culprits are liable to up to 15 years in jail over robbery and up to 25 years over murder attempt.
