A group of MEPs requested the abolition of roaming charges between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova in a letter to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The initiative was welcomed by Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu.

“Our country attaches great importance to achieving the liberalization of roaming with the member states of the European Union. This fact translates into concrete benefits for citizens, both those who travel for tourist purposes and those who make business trips, participate in international conferences or are visiting their close ones in the EU”, Nicu Popescu was quoted in a press release.

Moldova demonstrated bilaterally that it is possible to achieve this by signing an agreement with Romania. At the moment, its implementation is taking place successfully, with the operators of both states applying reduced charges benefitting the citizens of both states, the deputy prime minister noted.

“During discussions through diplomatic channels, most of the EU member states showed their openness to our country’s initiative, this topic has the political support of the EU and is on the agenda of discussions about reducing roaming costs, but additional examination is needed of the legal conditions for the conclusion of a long-term bilateral agreement between our country and the European Union”, Nicu Popescu added.
