Those who will insult or attack medical personnel on duty face penalties in the form of fines or even jail. Such provisions are stipulated in a bill drafted by the Ministry of Health, which was proposed for public consultations, IPN reports.

The bill supplements the Penal Code and institutes harsher penalties for the murder or injuring of medical personnel. Thus, the intentional murder will carry a penalty of 15 to 20 years’ imprisonment or life detention, while intentional injuring – of 10 to 12 years behind bars.

To bill also adds three more articles to the Penal Code, which define the notions of “doctor”, “doctor resident” and “medical worker”. Also, the article on hooliganism is extended to cover acts of hooliganism committed on the territory or inside public or private medical institutions. The punishment will represent a fine of 36,000 to 67,500 lei or up to five years in jail.

According to the authors, the number of cases of aggression against medical personnel increased in Moldova during the last few years. The last such case occurred at the start of this November, when an employee of the Oncological Institute was beaten.

As a result of public consultations, the bill is to be approved by the Government and will be then submitted to Parliament for adoption.
