Head of state hands over tricolor to Olympic squad for first European Games

President Nicolae Timofti handed over the national flag to the team that will represent Moldova at the first European Olympic Games, IPN has learned from the presidential press service.

“Sport is a way of showing the physical, moral and spiritual state of a nation. I hope our athletes will return home with good results. I would like the tricolor to be raised in Baku as many times as possible. Carry it with honor and dignity,” said the head of state.

Attending the meeting, the president of the National Olympic Committee Nicolae Juravschi said Moldova’s team is ready to achieve remarkable results at the Baku Olympiad. “Our experienced sportspersons are ready to defend their titles. The youngest of them will showcase their sports talents for the first time. We expect goods results to be achieved in boxing, athletics, freestyle wrestling and in other events,” he stated.

The first European Olympic Games will take place in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, on June 12-18, 2015. The event will involve more than 6,000 athletes from 50 countries. Moldova will be represented by over 80 athletes in 12 events, including swimming, athletics, cycling, canoeing, boxing, sambo, taekwondo, and judo.
