The Ministry of Health ordered an inquiry into the situation at the Chisinau Children’s Hospital “Valentin Ignatenko”. The results will be made public on August 7. Minister Andrei Usatyi said he will make no statements on this case by that date, IPN reports.

In a press briefing, Andrei Usatyi said the situation at the hospital is a consequence of the delay in implementing reforms in healthcare and of the violation of the ethical and deontological rules. “Society knows well that there are problems in the health system. They didn’t appear yesterday or the day before yesterday,” said the official.

He also said that at the Prime Minister’s request, measures were taken to determine the reasons why the orthopedic and traumatologic operations at the hospital were performed with industrial tools. During almost two weeks, specialists of the Ministry will investigate the case and will formulate proposals for preventing such situations in the future. Based on the investigation results, they will see what medical instruments are needed at this and other hospitals of the country.

In a film broadcast over the Internet on July 22, doctors of the Chisinau children’s hospital “Valentine Ignatenko” use an industrial drill during surgery. As a result, Iurie Leanca expressed his indignation at the conditions in which the children are operated and requested Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi to go to the institution to examine the situation. The minister said that all the subdivisions of the traumatology section and the institution are outfitted with the necessary equipment that does not pose a threat to the diagnosis or treatment of patients. Doctors said the opposite and voiced hope that the authorities will equip the hospital appropriately. Otherwise, they will perform only urgent operations, in cases of open fractures. On July 25, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca visited the hospital and confiscated a number of drills.
