A new hearing in the case of ex-Premier Vlad Filat, which was scheduled for March 22, was put off for the reason that the defendant does not feel well after he hit his head against a door in his cell a week ago. A new hearing in this case was set for March 24, 10:30am, IPN reports.

Prosecutor Adriana Betisor told the press that the hearing was proponed because the accused receives treatment and the medical prescriptions must be respected. But the defense evidently delays the case because they do not want the prosecution witnesses to be questioned as these have important statements to make. “We insist on the continuation of hearings. It is not for the first time that the witnesses for the prosecution come and stay behind the door and the hearings are put off,” she stated.

Vlad Filat’s lawyer, Igor Popa said that his client is receiving treatment prescribed for ten days, until March 28, and he must be under the doctor’s supervision. “The prosecution yet insists on holding hearings this week too. This haste is unjustified. We consider that the setting of the hearing for this Thursday is an abuse,” he stated.

The lawyer denied that the defense is delaying the examination of the case, saying they have no reasons for doing so.

Vlad Filat was deprived of parliamentary immunity and arrested on charges of passive corruption and influence peddling on October 15, 2015. He faces 7 to 15 years in jail and ban on holding particular public posts. Vlad Filat pleads not guilty.
