Iacob Gumenita investigated out of prison

The Centru district court rejected the prosecutors' request to extend for another 30 days the warrant for the house arrest of the former police chief of Chisinau municipality Iacob Gumenita and decided that he will be investigated out of prison, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to lawyer Ion Vazdoaga, the Centru disruct court took into account the state of Gumenita's health. The former police chief promised to appear in court when summoned and not to leave the country. “Iacob Gumenita does not intend to run away. Moreover, he is ready to prove his innocence,” Ion Vazdoaga said, stressing that new evidence will be presented at the trial. “We will prove that Gumenita as well a other police officers accused groundlessly are not guilty.” Iacob Gumenita was arrested on April 15. On April 19, he was charged with misconduct in office during the April 2009 events after pictures showing him kicking protesters in Chisinau's central square on the night of April 8 appeared in the press. Gumenita pleads not guilty.
