Though the situation in the region is tense, it is held under control. The Moldovan authorities do their duty and monitor the developments in the neighborhood, while Russian officials assured that the Ukrainian scenario will not be implemented in Moldova.

The statements were made after the closed-door parliamentary hearings centering on national security, IPN reports. Head of Parliament Igor Corman said a number of suggestions were made after the hearings. “They are aimed at maximally reducing a possible negative effect on Moldova. The hearings ended without the adoption of a statement,” he stated.

Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov said the authorities are monitoring attentively the events taking place in the region so as to prevent possible consequences for the country. “The Russian authorities assured that nothing similar to the Ukrainian scenario will be carried out in relation to Moldova. The approaches made by Tiraspol are not new. They are aimed at increasing tensions,” he said.

On the other hand, Communist MP Grigore Petrenco said the hearings involved 47 lawmakers. “The quorum needed for holding the meeting was not present. The hearings were held illegally. The presented information must be known by all the people. Nothing secret was said. The people must know the real situation in the army, in the relations with Ukraine and Russia. The Moldovans who live and work in Russia will suffer the consequences of the policy pursued by the current government. In the hearings they proposed interrupting the broadcasting of all the Russian channels on Moldova’s territory,” he said.

The parliamentary hearings were held behind closed doors in the afternoon of March 21. There were questioned representatives of the Foreign Ministry and the Security and Information Service and the officials in charge of the Transnistrian conflict settlement.
