Director of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Igor Munteanu said the President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon acts against the Government’s agenda in his relationship with the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Rogozin. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, Igor Munteanu stated that Igor Dodon goes against the Western current and makes visits to Teheran, Iran, which was sanctioned by the U.S. for supporting international terrorism, IPN reports.

According to Igor Munteanu, there are a number of reasons that make President Dodon do less wise things. The President’s decision to take part in the inauguration of the President of Iran hasn’t been coordinated with internal institutions that deal with foreign policy. “He pursues a theme that is close to the interests of the Russian Federation and considers he should also be there where Rogozin and other Russian officials are. It is a kind of eclipse of reason. We have almost nothing in common with Iran. There is no external trade with this country, while the sanctions imposed against it by particular important countries for us are related to the actions of the Iranian state that threaten regional and international security,” he stated.

Igor Munteanu noted Moldova’s reputation is affected by such trips made by the President. Iran, North Korea and the Russian Federation are countries that become enemies for the United States and therefore those who want to have more advanced relations with this country could also be affected by a wave of sanctions. “Thank God we are not connected to this region with big turmoil and internal wars, with religious conflicts and accelerated escalations of particular tendencies that cover Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria,” said the director of “Viitorul”.

He also said that the President in the Republic of Moldova has representative powers and does not become involved in foreign policy, while Igor Dodon, by his recent actions, violated the principle of separation of powers in the state. The President should have taken into account the fact that his decisions cost and could cost him too because the officials who subdue the state institutions can face a no confidence procedure or can be held accountable for actions that are not within his competence, in accordance with the Constitution.
