Initiative group for studying religion in schools submits documents for referendum to CEC

The initiative group that pleads for studying the Basis of Orthodoxy as mandatory school subject lodged the documents needed to hold a legislative referendum on the issue to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) on May 24, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the Commission's vice president Renata Lapti, within 15 days the CEC will decide whether to register or not the initiative group that will start collecting signatures in support of the referendum. At least 200,000 signatures must be collected in order to hold a referendum. The initiative group is headed by former Minister of the Interior and former head of the Security and Information Service Valeriu Pasat, and was blessed by the Metropolitan Bishop of Chisinau and all Moldova, His Holiness Vladimir.
