The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has announced that the investigation into the case of corruption at the Leuseni customs pots was finished. Thirteen border police officers will stand trial in this case. The materials charging another 24 officers of the Leuseni customs post and five employees of the National Patrolling Inspectorate were sent to court a month ago, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the PGO, 42 persons overall were charged in one of the most complex corruption cases. They face up to ten years in jail and a fine of up to 60,000 lei. They will be also banned from holding particular posts for a period of two to five years.

The prosecutors established that the customs officers asked for and took sums of €100 to €350 from haulers for facilitating the customs procedures. Defendants’ acts were not isolated and single, but became a large-scale phenomenon.
