The Botanical Garden in Chisinau needs investments of approximately 9 million lei to finish the second stage of construction stipulated by the initial plan. The works will include the laying out of the main entrance to the garden, the access to which is now hampered by the terminus of the trolleybuses running on routes No. 22 and 4, the setting up of several laboratories and of an orangery.

The founder and first director of the Botanical Garden, academician Alexandru Ciubotaru told a news conference at IPN that these problems can be solved by involving the municipality and residents of Chisinau. The park situated opposite the Botanical Garden also needs to be restored. That land, managed by the Ministry of Culture, is not look after. The academic community suggested that the territory should be rehabilitated and named the Union Park. It could be opened the day Moldova would join the EU. The central authorities welcomed the initiative, but nothing was yet done in this respect.

Doctor of Biology Ion Rosca said that following the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU, the Botanical Garden is to join the European research conception and plays and essential role in implementing the sustainable development strategy and in promoting culture and tourism. The academic community pleads for including the Botanical Garden in the national tourist corridor.

The basic role of the Botanical Garden is to promote science and develop horticulture. According to Ion Rosca, the institution should be involved in the creation of a horticulture specialist and researcher training center, according to the European standards. To be able to do so, the Botanical Garden must obtain the status of national institution that, for its part, will promote the creation of another two botanical gardens in Balti and Cahul, where there are working universities. Such an initiative has been discussed for over 10 years.

Ion Rosca stated that the specialists formed by the Botanical Garden can contribute to creating the scientific basis, greening villages and towns and solving ecological problems by combining theoretical researches with management measures with educative role so as to save individual communities of species.
