Ion Caras was appointed manager of the Moldovan national football team today by the Moldovan Football Federation (FMF), Info-Prim Neo reports.
Caras outscored Igor Dobrovolski and Ion Testemitanu with 12 to 2 and 0 votes, respectively, to become Moldova manager again, after a 15-year break. He was the first manager of the national team, coaching it from 1990 to 1997.
“Ion Caras is an experienced manager and he is intimately familiar with the Moldovan football. This is why we chose him”, stated FMF head Pavel Cebanu at a news conference.
“I've considered this proposition very seriously. All I want now is to achieve greater results than in the past”, stated Ion Caras.
The duration of the contract is not determined. “I think we'll follow the rule that was used for other coaches. He'll manage the national team for one preliminary season and then we'll see”, said Pavel Cebanu.
Ion Caras will make his debut as Moldova manager in a friendly with Belarus on February 29. Caras will also prepare the Tricolors for the 2014 World Cup qualifying round that will start this autumn.
Ion Caras, 61, previously coached Zimbru Chisinau, Constructorul Chisinau, Nistru Otaci and Politehnica Chisinau
