The candidate for premiership Ion Sturza said he wants modern local public administration, as in other states. He considers regionalization is one of the solutions that can help develop the local public authorities. This and other issues were discussed in a meeting of the candidate with members of the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova on December 30, IPN reports.

According to Ion Sturza, the key problem in Moldova is the fact that the politicians look at the people as at voters, while at the local public authorities – as at an instrument that mobilizes the voters. “For the politicians, you are voters. If we had an inclusive state that ensured the services are for the people, it would be a period of glory for us,” said the candidate for Prime Minister.

He also said that the regional development programs and the financial assistance from abroad must not be distributed according to political criteria, as now. “When the Government is invested, we must be ready for a wave of projects from abroad. We should not be ashamed to take different second-hand equipment from the European states. We must not wait for the government or a genial minister for local development. We must act on our own initiative,” stated Ion Sturza.

As to the efficiency of the local public authorities, Ion Sturza said that of the over 900 mayor’s offices that exist in the country, 250 do not meet the legal provisions because they manage too small communities. “It is considered that some of the villages should be merged so as to make them more efficient. Cooperation between mayor’s offices means a lot. I’m glad that the mayors started to speak in economic terms and think about the economic development of the communities,” he stated.

Executive director of the Congress of Local Authorities Viorel Furdui said that despite the divided society, the public authorities could be united five years ago. “We more often hear that we must develop the country economically, socially and educationally and that we must fight corruption. All the necessary strategies and parliamentary plans were worked out, but remained unimplemented,” he stated. According to him, the future government program must take into account the wishes of the local public authorities because things will remain unchanged if these are neglected and unmotivated.
