Ireland supports with great enthusiasm the efforts made by the Republic of Moldova to join the European Union and wants the Republic of Moldova to become an EU member as soon as possible, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Ireland Seán Ó Fearghaíl stated at a press conference given in Chisinau together with Moldova’s Speaker Igor Grosu, IPN reports.

“Although at the beginning, when we joined, we were among the poorest countries in the European communities, today we are among the richest countries of the European Union. Accession was not the only reason for this, but it was a driving force in increasing the welfare of our country,” said the Irish official.

Seán Ó Fearghaíl noted that extending the parliamentary relations is one of the purposes of the visit. “But I also have special reasons. First of all, I want to thank you personally for the thousands of Moldovan citizens you have “lent” to us as a country because they make a wonderful contribution to the social and economic development of the country. They are people who have special work ethic. I urge them not to lose touch with their homeland, not to give up their traditions, but to simultaneously respect ours,” said the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

According to him, the diaspora has a significant role in the development of its own country and so it was in the case of Ireland. And it is very important that the Moldovan authorities manage to maintain strong relations with the country’s diaspora. He encouraged the Moldovans abroad not to lose touch with their country of origin and even to return home with the gained experience and contribute to the country’s development.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that the discussion was a very good one and they conferred on the events, political and economic situation in Moldova. ”Ireland and Moldova have a number of similarities, both in history and in the European path. We have what to learn from each other and who if not Ireland understands Moldova’s condition in the European integration process,” stated Igor Grosu.

He thanked the Irish authorities for the decision to open the embassy in Chisinau, which is a strong political and diplomatic event. “I mentioned our progress in the integration process and asked my Irish colleagues to support us in our process of formally opening negotiations,” he said.

The visit by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Ireland Seán Ó Fearghaíl to the Republic of Moldova is the first visit made by an Irish speaker during 25 years since the establishment of Moldovan-Irish diplomatic relations.
