Japan will provide the antiviral drug Avigan, which is also called Favipiravir, to Moldova gratis. The drug, which is tested in the treatment of COVID-19, will be delivered to the Infectious Diseases Hospital “Toma Ciorbă” in the municipality of Chisinau, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, for the prompt implementation of the initiative, Japan will urgently offer a grant of US$ 1 million to the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) for buying and distributing the drug made by a Japanese pharmaceutical company. The drug will reach such countries as Moldova, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration welcomes the April 7 decision by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Toshimitsu Motegi, by which the Japanese authorities’ decision to respond to the assistance call made by a number of states affected by the novel coronavirus, including the Republic of Moldova, is announced,” says the Ministry’s press release.
