The Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a criminal case for gang rape in the case of a woman from a village of Strășeni district, who was abused by three individuals. Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that it is a case that aroused concern and consternation. One of the suspects is in pretrial detention, the second is under house arrest, and the third was placed under judicial control.

According to the minister, it is imperative that the people subjected to any form of violence benefit from access to justice and unconditional support. Cases of violence and abuse cannot be tolerated in any form. “I am sure that the law enforcement agencies will act firmly to investigate the circumstances of the case in all aspects, swiftly and, respectively, to hold those responsible accountable. The most important thing, however, is that the victims benefit from protection, support and specialized assistance, including qualified legal aid and compassion from society,” Veronica Mihailov-Moraru told the press.

Contacted by IPN for details, Violina Moraru, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office, said that this case happened in September. The prosecutor in charge of the case requested that all the defendants be placed in pretrial detention for 30 days. “By the Court of Appeals’ decision of September 17, the prosecutor’s appeal was rejected and the conclusion of the first court being upheld. The criminal investigation continues. Relevant examinations were ordered and other necessary actions were taken to collect evidence,” stated said Violina Moraru.

The press reported that the woman, who raises two children alone, was taken to the shore of a pond and was repeatedly abused by the three individuals there. The suspects face up to 12 years in prison.
