Lawmakers elect representatives of civil society on National Integrity Commission

The legal commission for appointments and immunities examined the candidates fielded by civil society to work on the National Integrity Commission. Two persons were selected of five - Cristina Cojocaru, expert of the Association for Participatory Democracy, and Efim Obreja, expert of Transparency International Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. The commission’s chairman Victor Popa said that these candidates are massively supported by NGOs. The lawmakers decided to meet on March 1, one hour before the Parliament’s sitting, and invite the two candidates to discuss with them. The National Integrity Commission will verify the income and property statements and the personal interest statements of the civil servants. It will check if there are unjustified differences between the incomes earned and those declared by the public servants while in office and the property obtained by them in the same period and will inform the prosecution body or the fiscal body. The commission will consist of five members with the same rights that are confirmed to post by Parliament for a period of five years. The parliamentary majority delegates three members to work on the commission, while the opposition and civil society by one. The chairman of the commission is chosen by Parliament from among the members of the commission. The Speaker proposes the candidate after consulting all the parliamentary groups.
