MPs of the Liberal Party on September 19 submitted an application to the Constitutional Court whereby they ask to declare Articles 33 and 34 of the Law on the Local Public Administration, which refer to the suspension of mayors, and Article 177 of the Election Code, which defines the reasons for which a referendum on the dismissal of a mayor can be held, as unconstitutional, IPN reports.

According to the deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Valeriu Munteanu, the case of Dorin Chirtoaca revealed a number of faults in the legislation and shows that the mayors are very vulnerable to the coercive state apparatus. “We will find in Europe no example of local elected official voted by the community who can be suspended by a public authority,” he stated.

Valeriu Munteanu also said that the party’s leader Mihai Ghimpu informed the Central Election Commission about the submitted application and requested this to delay taking a decision as to the referendum until the Constitutional Court provides an answer.
